You may expect the two-disc encyclopedia to provide articles titled, say, A-J on one disc and K-Z on another, an arrangement that could be annoying if you don’t have a multi-disc drive. But that’s not how it works, the two-CD version contains the basic encyclopedia on one disc and supplemental videos on the other, so disc-swapping is kept to a minimum.

Search tools

The encyclopedia interface includes both browse and search features. To browse, you can scroll a list of all the articles in the encyclopedia, or you can start typing in a topic and the list will move to the articles beginning with the letters you typed.

You can use a filter feature to browse through articles in such categories as History, Geography, Language & Literature, Performing Arts, and Technology. Each category is further divided into relevant subcategories. You also can browse lists of all the multimedia elements in the encyclopedia.

If you select the Search tab on the main screen, you can perform simple keyword searches, or you can click the “Complex” button to open a dialog box that facilitates advanced searching, including Boolean and proximity techniques. You also can limit your search to specific subject categories and specific types of media (e.g., Animations & Videos, Fact Boxes, Maps, Pictures, or Sounds.)

When you open an article, you’ll see the text and a preview illustration. You can select a Related Media tab to access a list of links to any sounds, images, tables, maps, or fact boxes related to the article. Long articles offer interactive outlines that let you jump quickly between the sections. Back and History buttons let you retrace your research paths and return to articles you’ve found before.

You can print, copy, and save information. And you can mark text or other media for inclusion in a Marker list, a feature similar to a list of bookmarks in a Web browser.

Online links

The Online Knowledge Explorer, available only in the deluxe product, is a tool that extends your research onto the Internet and provides, as the encyclopedia’s editors call it, “multi-layered coverage.”

Now imagine this on CD.

Here’s how the Online Knowledge Explorer works: If you access an article for which the editors have identified additional information in cyberspace, appropriate hyperlinks will appear with the encyclopedia’s text.

For example, if you’re researching John Updike, you can follow a hyperlink in the GME article to a lengthier article about the writer in the online version of the Encyclopedia Americana. Or you can find general articles about novels and about Pennsylvania, the author’s home state, in the online New Book of Knowledge.

If you’re researching, say, jazz, you can follow links to articles in the two other encyclopedias as well as jazz-related Web sites and online updates to GME articles. The editors post revisions to about 500 articles per month.

Asymetrix Was Visionary In Its Acquisitions

Following up on its recent acquisition of Aimtech, Asymetrix surprised attendees of its On-Line Learning ’97 users conference, September 8-10 in Seattle, by announcing its acquisition of Oakes Interactive of Needham, Massachusetts. Oakes Interactive is a fastgrowing provider of what market analyst Bob Gill of Gartner Group calls “systems- and solutions-based CBT.” Gill says that Oakes’ primary business — custom development and management of enterprise-wide technology-delivered training with Web and Intranet training as key components — will become the largest growth area in the training market over the coming years. At the same time, vendors of training development tools, such as Asymetrix, will experience, “downward price pressure” and “brutal competition,” according to Gill.

Gill sees this merger as a “smart diversifying move” on Asymetrix’s part, an example of a big fish eating a smaller fish before it outgrows its predator. As low-end training development tools are driven toward commodity pricing by Web development tools and as high-end authoring remains inelastic and modest in volume, training companies who do nothing but sell development tools will find themselves in trouble, Gill says. Consequently, now is the time for tool vendors like Asymetrix to branch out.

The acquisition allows Asymetrix to beef up the professional services and consulting arm of its business, and the appointment of Kevin Oakes, former president and CEO of Oakes Interactive, to the presidency of Asymetrix seems to indicate that the company agrees with Gill’s market projections.

Along with this deal, Asymetrix also gets two smaller companies nestled under the Oakes Interactive umbrella — TopShelf Multimedia, a vendor of corporate off-the-shelf multimedia training titles, and Acorn Associates, which provides Fortune 1000 companies with up-front assessment and analysis of training development needs.

Asymetrix’s acquisition of Aimtech in july 1997 has left some Aimtech tool users concerned about Asymetrix’s level of support for Aimtech products such as IconAuthor, CBT Express, and Jamba. This latest deal with Oakes should help allay those fears, since Oakes Interactive is known as a heavy user of Aimtech tools (even developing and marketing an add-on for CBT Express called CBTXtras). But Kevin Oakes says that even though he likes IconAuthor a lot, Oakes Interactive has never been a one-tool company; it has used all the major CBT authoring systems, including ToolBook, Authorware, and Quest. Oakes says his company has always tried to pick “the best tool for the job” objectively, and to comply with client preferences. He doesn’t foresee any major changes in that policy.

Several other developments were announced at the users conference. Foremost is a new strategic relationship between Asymetrix and CBT Systems to provide CBT Systems clients with a simplified version of ToolBook that they can use to customize their CBT Systems courses. CBT Systems is one of the country’s largest suppliers of off-the-shelf CBT courseware to the Information Technology market.

Asymetrix also announced that it has joined with Systems & Computer Technology Corporation (SCT) in announcing Aspire, a Web-based learning system that combines clients’ content with learner registration, selection and delivery of courses from a course catalog, online billing and payment, student progress tracking, and Web site services and management. At the heart of Aspire is SCT’s learner management software, which is supplemented with the Asymetrix Librarian server tool for content management and with authoring tools from the ToolBook 11 family. Web site services from MCI, content conversion services, and electronic commerce services complete the Aspire package. Based in Malvern, Pennsylvania, SCT’s background is in administrative systems for colleges and universities.

Another showtime announcement revealed that Los Alamos National Laboratory will use the ToolBook family of products to author, deploy, and manage “just-in-time” online courses to 8,000 desktops at its New Mexico lab facilities. Asymetrix also announced OEM relationship agreements to provide its digital media tools, Digital Video Producer, Web3d, and 3D/FX, to several companies, including Intel, IBM, Compaq, Sony Electronics, 3Com Corporation, Diamond Multimedia Systems, Creative Labs, Matrox, Intergraph Systems, Chromatic Research, STB System, IXMICRO, and Miro.

Docent Trains With The Best Of Them

Corporate trainers could soon get a chance to see how online training really affects business results.

Docent, Inc. last week announced Internet-based training software that links course results with existing corporate databases, so companies can tie training to the bottom line.

Docent 2.0 lets users outline and create online courses by importing elements from different course development products or programs. The Docent server software sits on a World Wide Web server and delivers the course across the Internet or a corporate intranet.

The Docent Reporter module then tracks each student’s progress and can export that data to corporate databases from Oracle Corp., Sybase, Inc. or Microsoft Corp.

For example, a sales manager could see how sales were affected after the sales staff in one region received training on a new company product line.

There is growing interest among businesses in using the Internet as a training delivery mechanism, according to International Data Corp. (IDC) in Framingham, Mass. IDC analysts estimate that the Web-based training market could hit $1 billion by 2000.

But the lack of paper quizzes, reports and other methods of tracking students makes it difficult to see if online training affects how workers do their jobs.

MicroAge, Inc. put online training to the test by developing 30 courses using Docent’s new software. And though the courses are in their early stages, managers said they can see some increase in sales productivity for sales groups that took the courses.

“No one in sales will do anything without motivations,” said Peter Rourke, director of the Category Solutions/Intranet group at the Tempe, Ariz.-based computer reseller. “And if they now know they will be able to better sell a major product, then they will take the time” for the course.

Analysts said Docent isn’t the only training software vendor with a tracking system. But it is the only one that supplies standards-based links to common business databases.

With Docent, “we could see if service calls regarding our products have fallen because of the training our field service people have had,” said Angelo Micheletti, a senior technical trainer at Documentum, Inc. in Pleasanton, Calif.

“Companies are beginning to link their training directly to business needs. So training groups need to prove to the powers that be that training is making a difference,” said Christianne Moretti, manager of information technology training research at IDC in Toronto. “[Docent 2.0] could possibly show them whether they have gotten there yet.”

Another benefit is that poor business results let trainers quickly react to courses that aren’t having any impact and make changes.

Palo Alto, Calif.-based Docent (formerly Stanford Testing Systems) initially has targeted the package at sales, help desk and customer service departments. That’s because typically these groups have structured measurement systems in place that make it easier to tie training data to business performance.
